Social Sex

By: Jonathan Seidel

Materialistic society is nothing new and yet the hedonistic aura in its modern expression is nothing like the ancient greeks or romans. Why they may have been more promiscuous than other regions it is not clear that it is widespread. For the elites it may have been but now for the average Joe. Still the candid belief in deep religious reverence of medievals is also mistaken. Yet there were societal standards through the years maintaining certain values. While the psychological torture was not thoroughly examined, it was illegal. Child prostitution was unlawful and adultery was of the cruelest assaults. Prostitution was a phenomenon but the honour for oneself was of utmost importance. If anything there may be a misguided repression that bolstered in the consumerist individuality.

The great irony of the great sexual revolution was that it wasn’t a reactionary moment but a gradual incline. Erotic novels had surfaced in the American newspapers since the 1770s. Religion attempted to hold back on sexual motivation but more freedom and more exposure brought a bigger push. The roaring twenties were a big push for sexual liberation. Across the globe. Part of the Nazi agenda was to retreat to the sexually repressed “olden days”, blaming Jews for the promiscuity. While there were moments and governmental attempts to keep sexuality under wraps it did not go over well. Unsuccessfully repressing sexuality. The boomers were the climax in the sixties with excessive individuality and liberation to revolutionise sexuality. While sexual revolution hasn’t achieved all that it set out to be, it did accomplish much.

The enlightenment argument must go hand in hand with technological advancement. Just as slavery was not solely a logical ideal but a product of slavery’s nuisance. It was much easier to argue ethically against slavery when it wasn’t the lone economic avenue (wage slavery and child labour became new factory alternatives that in the short run were ignored). Whether from an individualised or elite position more availability and possibilities were formed. Garnering a deeper intensity toward maturity. Glossing over the obvious extensive sexual freedom today, its origins manifested in cultural advancements. While a spectrum must always be administered concerning apparent sexually repressed societies, structural affinities and educational values hindered popular divergence. Divergence existed but was devious sand marked immaturity and impurity.

The penetrating logos of the enlightenment and technological advancements sparked a departure from traditional communities. Enlightenment ideas themselves may not have been the fire but the scientific paradigm and individualistic thrust broke free of the religious exclusion. Sexuality advanced with more personal freedom. More options to explore uncharted territory. Dreaming of more opportunities became a reality in the jungle of possibility. Moving away from traditional sectors who preached sexual abstinence became less fearsome yoke. New experiences were on the horizon for the urbanised newbies. An entire cultural shift was possible with more liberal pushes toward acceptability. Normalising previous repression was exploited with new encounters to enjoy. Rifts exploded as post-WWI consequences led deplored soldiers with sexual diseases to reexamine sexuality as well as growing female involvement in the workforce to embrace their sexuality.

The newfound liberation made women icons in media and film. A more exposed aura to represent their will to society. The roaring twenties was an affluent time for growth as taboos fell and sex became a normative feature. Able to distinguish between female cosmetics and prostitution. The early feminist wave blatantly strengthened the resolve to both sexes to fondle and enjoy one another physically away from the religious conservatism. While there was a brief conservative reaction up till WWII with the Great Depression hounding much of the attention, it was afterwards that sexuality regained its momentum. Petting parties in the 20s was enjoyable exposure to sexuality. America had won the Great War and prospering. Enjoying the wonderful youth with some sexual fun was experience points in the growing individualism. With the end of the war and seeking restitution after fifteen yers of struggle was momentarily maximisation. Sexuality was adventurous and distracting. While Elvis and Playboy emerged in the postwar era their influence only hastened to bolster the already sexually active audience.

The post war era frowned upon sexual suppression. Newfound psychological studies may have contributed to the sexual promotion. With more sexual openness and more religious reactionaries, there was more to rebel. Modern individualism hit an all time high with the sexual revolution. A moment for necessary change. No more in its evolutionary rebellion but in a revolutionary movement. To make a stand. With great strides in female workforce and civil rights extensive inclusion was warranted. Taboos of all sorts were loosing their grip amongst the young. The youth especially growing up in a changing society were sympathetic to chief claims of demoted individuals. Unable to embrace their freedom. Men had been away and women had gained the necessary skill and status there was no turning back. The more pushback the more powerful the sex promoters became.

The sexual revolution was an end to this oscillating force and instead put women’s issues in the spotlight. No more back and forth. A decision would be made. The counterculture seeking to evaluate the body and mind against the religious conservatism lurking beneath the surface. Medicinal advancements in birth control and penicillin protected untraditional sex. The boomer youth was secure in industrialised society as well as open for change. Privileged with less dire issues to worry about. They turned inward to satisfy themselves and their individuality. The war abroad was over and the economy was beaming once again. The focus was on individualised growth. Media along with new adventures idolised sexual engagement. It was hip and a symbol of maturity in a newfound society unfettered by traditional value indicators.

The revolutionary paradigm that the dominating shift switches. No more was there mere enjoyment but a way of life. The sexual revolution was about an ideology and openness unseen before. With cinematic assistance, sexuality rose to new prominence. Moving to more promiscuity was a generated way to adulthood. It was part of the mature roadway. It was part of being a kid and enjoying life with restrictions. With sexuality out in the open it was more apparent to be intimate for libido satisfaction. No longer needing to hold to some higher aura, Free to have fun and express in more taboo ways that were slowly losing their mojo. Since it was still somewhat rebellious to concerned traditional parents, it was a childish yet seductive routine to demonstrate the shift.

The consequences while religiously abhorrent also constructed a hyper-sexualised society. Sex was not something you did but who you were. Whether a heterosexual a homosexual a pansexual. Virgin and slut became terms to tease others for their choices. Girls took the hardest hit on this one with dual victimisation. Treading carefully to ensure a favourable opinion from others. Yet passing judgement concerning sexuality became a numbers game into control freak craziness. Sexual identity became a modifier for one’s popularity or loneliness. Forced into boxes branded with titles. Trying to be in the it-group. Conforming for personal sake. Identity and respect was conditioned on level of exposure measuring “coolness”. Following leads from peers to be accepted and be a part of the ongoing movement.

The power corresponded to looking and acting in a certain way. Taking points from magazines and movies. Relying on peer pressure to issue one’s lifestyle. Peer pressure was not a novelty but with more individuality and freedom, groups formed with renewed ideals. Ideas in a sense of goals. The power of sexual exposure drowned youth in a propagandised machine. In order to reach adulthood achievements were necessary. Certain sexual experiences were required. Yet the sexual acts came with sexually manipulative attire and gatherings. A purposeful set up to heighten libido. Whether conscious or subconscious there is a lot of seeing and being seen. Attraction to bolster endorphins and blissfully enjoy the comfort of one another.

The sexual experience was no longer something one did but one became. A pragmatic action became an ontological status. The enjoyment of sex became an aspiration of significant practice. Youth experimentation was to be more extensive. No taboos more exotic exploration. Initial rebellion became a mantra of life. It was less acting out and more joining a cult. One night stands and extensive sexual seeking became a hallmark of nightclubs. A more entitled sexual preference was a lustful circus. A collectivist movement all in line with what became known as hookup culture. Simple attraction no responsibility. Letting one’s endorphins and social pressures draw a hardline of one’s wishful expectation. Unattached unhinged commonplace. The normalcy stressed a thirst that had to be quenched with sexual experience.

The peer reviewed pressure was not all that difficult to push through. Sexual liberation for many was a a calming sensation. Letting all the walls fall and just enjoy irresponsibly. To have fun against the formal taboos was freedom at its max. It was not a difficult moment to buy into. Media did its part by surrounding the movement with consistent erotica to exercise raging hormonal activity. No wonder the youth are experimenting with glee. From the shows they watch to the music they play to the clothes they wear to the gossip they preach. It is all sexually underpinned or at the least laced. It is coercing forces sending subliminal messages to the brain without conscious internalisation. It is the normal thing to do. A club is an enclosed social setting dimmed lights with sexually laced music with drunken folk dancing in close proximity. The sexual forces encircle the space. These innuendos go unnoticed. So the fun and excess joy from meeting a girl at a club and bringing her home for some lovemaking is just part of the routine.

The religious response is hellfire. Yet such a dubious reactionary response is bound to inflame the other side. Repression is never the proper nor successful response. Yet classical models may prompt a more balanced view of sexual expression. Diagnosing the hyper-sexualisation cultivates a habituated society open with their sexuality. Much of the sex-gender debate is connected to the peaceful calmness of sexuality. LGBT and non-binary associations are part of the ontological status aspect. Open with your sex life also means open with who you are sexually. While terms like slut and gay do not mean the same thing, they do accord to sexual preference. They are both statuses based on sexual expression. The gender scope seeks to maximise the sexual liberation by extending beyond traditional categories. Actions personify internal feelings and perception of the world. Gender identity and romantic orientation differ and yet there is a status relation.

The sexual freedom endowed combined with excessive liberty has inherited new constructions beyond the pale. Gender is now a choice away from sexual orientation. Yet it may be the final nail in the coffin. While homosexuality and bisexuality proposed enjoying romantic creations with both sexes the transexual and pansexuality brought upon the genderless motif. It was no longer about feels for others but feelings for the self. With the possibility of transcending one’s own sexual orientation by virtue of inner feelings, appearance changes and verbal cues, the status theme came centerstage. While religious dogma may have had its own influence in contributing to this ontological cause, the spotlight rose more recently. Yet this approach founded a more realistic personification of diversity and malleability.

The illegitimate redemption for outlawing or outcasting the gender fluid character. Yet even in this gender fluidity there is still a sexual narcissism dominating the frame game devoid of these inquires. Sexuality is important but so is one’s being. The classical greeks were into sexuality but sought balance for joyful execution. Sexual exploration need not be a movement to be trolled onto. A status to claimed or followed. It’s a full objectification for social points. A fun game at the expense of the self. Having fun and experimenting is not the issue its the indignity of social release. It is the lack of self control whereby the act is of meagre consequence. It isn’t about sacred religious tropes but of sexual honour. It is all for the machine more than for the self. The sexual frame is a mockery of intimacy. A way to realise endorphins and check off a fun night. It is quite immature and necessarily immodest.

The lengths mustered to receive these enjoyments is full prostitution. At least those prostituting themselves are making a buck doing so. Sex for them is enjoyable and monetarily sufficient. Yet the desire to sleep one’s way into glory may be an age-old royal routine but not a feasible marker. Nor is it a relevant factor to much of humanity. In a way the royal routine was more to impose power and demonstrate status. A motion of liberty that has been extended to everyone else. Today mutuality is necessary but those power forces are still reflected in the popularity checklist hierarchy. Though much of this may be accumulated subconsciously. Doing it for enjoyment but also wishing for power dynamic stabilisation. Autonomic decision-making to choose to act promiscuously. Displaying superior signals to convey power on the self and over another.

The ultra-religious enclosed societies do suppress sexuality which does create a taboo relationship to sex. Sexuality is a missioned centred on procreation and familial development. There is an awkwardness hellbent on retaining purity which when goes wrong has terrible ramifications. Yet in a nutshell the lack of promiscuous access though imperfect does reduce the sexual desire. The restrictive aura has an immature perspective on sexuality. This reactionary exclusion does create an island devoid of sexual symbolism. There is no conversation other than to damn those who wish to publicise the subject. It is a private matter between a married union. Yet even the basic sexual link is void for most of adolescence. A balance must be struck to ensure a careful sensation of dually relational centrality. The absence of any media and exposure prevents any inspiration but also muddles connectivity to others and exploration.

The classical hellenistic output is mistranslated. The Epicurean hedonism pursuit of sexual gratification was advocated with ascetic underpinnings. Sexuality was an act to enjoy but not to become over-engrossed in. Liberty back then was limited amongst suitable participants which has expanded in modern democratic countries. The mutual endeavour has provided both sides to seek each other out. A long standing esoteric repression has lost its shine. Everyone has their boundaries and their limits but there is a clear influence from the media’s coronation. Social influences from each angle push the sexual agenda on the public. It is a matrix of sorts. A public consent in light of the social apparatus. Just as religious dogma and clerical sermons hindered sexual advances, current advertisements bolster sexual activity. The external impact generates an order to follow.
